Position Summary

Under general supervision, reviews and consolidates the Master Patient Index (MPI) to provide an accurate database of current and historical patient data.

Duties and Responsibilities:



Essential Functions:

  • Reviews the integrity of the EMPI to provide an accurate database, ensuring each patient and number is uniquely and correctly identified
  • Corrects and merges duplicate numbers, merges account numbers or moves account numbers to appropriate MRN so that other medical departments are able to register and input data into the system for patient care
  • Combines patient records that were duplicated; pulls and combines charts to merge the physical record (when indicated)
  • Uncombine patient records that were inappropriately combined and ensures correct MRNs and FINs are established for separate individuals.
  • Handles incoming calls and emails regarding registration issues due to duplicate or incorrect number assignment
  • Communicates to other departments and managers of stand-alone applications MRN merge information in an effort to keep MRN consistent in all systems. 
  • Remains available on an on call basis (after hours/weekends/holidays) to complete urgent MRN merges
  • Travels (up to 25% of time) to other McLaren facilities/hospitals to assist with go lives as well as train site staff.



Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May process records (prep, scan, quality control, validate) according to facility guidelines
  • May serve as an information resource by responding to requests for general and medical information received via phone, fax or in person
  • Ability to apply The Joint Commission requirements, HCFA regulations, HIPAA regulations, Medical Staff Rules and Regulations, and department procedures when reviewing a medical record to identify deficiencies that could jeopardize hospital certification, legal and/or financial status.
  • May perform other duties as necessary to meet company and department objectives

    Education, Experience & Licensure:

  • Associate’s degree preferred or two years of advanced education and an additional experience is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years medical records experience
